With the assignment of the task of business names registration to Provincial Councils as per List 1 of 9^th Schedule of the 13^th Amendment to the Constitution, each Provincial Council adopted statutes to regularize the law pertaining to business names registration within their provinces. As a result, this department has been established to function as per the statute adopted by the Western Provincial Council relating to the business names registration.

Accordingly, Western Provincial Business Names Statute No. 04 of 1990 was put into effect from 01.01.1991 and from 01.10.2013 onwards, amended Business Names Statute of Trade, Corporations and Non Incorporated Trade Institutions of Western Province No. 05 of 2011 is in effect.

Monitoring and coordinating of all the business names registration affairs of Western Province, especially, issuance of business names registration certificates of the businesses in Divisional Secretariat divisions of Colombo district including Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat division are maintained by this department and the public have been facilitated through all the Divisional Secretariats of Western Province to obtain services related to business names registration affairs.
