It takes a maximum of 05 working days to issue a certificate of business names registration provided that you properly submit the relevant application form along with all the correct documents related to it.

Yes. After verifying the certified copies, the originals will be returned to you on the same occasion.

By a Notary.

Is it possible to register any individual or partnership business located within the Western Province at your department ?.
Mainly the registration of business names belonging to 5 Divisional Secretary’s divisions of Colombo, Thimbirigasyaya, Dehiwala, Ratmalana and Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is carried out by this Department. The registration of business names belonging to other Divisional Secretary’s divisions, is carried out by the respective Divisional Secretary’s Office, under the authority and control of the Registrar.

Is National Identity Card compulsory for business names registration ?
Yes. According to the Provisions of the Statute National Identity Card is compulsory.

If the National Identity Card is lost/ misplaced/ not clear/ submitted for re-preparation ?
- If the National Identity Card is lost or misplaced :-The police report obtained from the OIC of the respective police station should be produced.

If the National Identity Card is not clear :-Driving License / Pass Port can be produced along with the National Identity Card for confirmation.
- If the National Identity Card has been handed over to the Grama Niladhari for re-preparation :-Copy of the receipt certified and issued by the Grama Niladhari can be produced.

Within how many days, after the commencement of the business, should the application be submitted for registration ?.
Application should be submitted within 14 days from the date of commencement of the business. Otherwise the application should be submitted within the extended time period provided by the Registrar. ( A time period of 30 days has been provided by the Registrar.)

Who decides the late fee for the late applications ?.
Late fee is decided by the Registrar or by the Divisional Secretary who has the relevant authority to decide.

YES. As per the rules of the Business Names Statute, depending on the circumstances, if there are documents that the registrar can demand, then the applicant has to submit those documents.
